How Many Real Plants Did You Eat Today?

When we talk about eating more fruits and vegetables, it is easy to picture a salad at lunch, broccoli with supper, and an apple somewhere in between and think we've done fairly well. But this week's Casaroma challenge is asking you to look at your food a little differently — not just at how much plant food you're eating, but how much variety is actually showing up throughout your day.

Vegetables and fruit count, of course, but so do the smaller plants we often overlook. The parsley in your salad, cinnamon in your breakfast, garlic and onion in your supper, fresh basil in a sauce, berries in your yogurt, beans in your soup, and the herbs and spices you use while cooking all add to the variety of real plants coming through your kitchen.

Your challenge: Can you find 10 different real plants in one day?

We're talking about real, naturally occurring plants and plant colours — vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices and legumes — rather than colours created with food dyes or added to packaged foods.

After hearing from people who are joining us in the challenge this week, we decided to make it a little more fun and give you somewhere to keep track. So we've created a free printable 7-Day Real Plant Challenge Sheet with space to record your plants each day, count your daily variety, and look back at the end of the week to see what you discovered.

Download your free challenge sheet below, print it off and put it somewhere you'll actually see it — on the fridge, beside the kettle or on the kitchen counter. Then start counting.
