One of the things we have always loved about aromatherapy is that it does not have to be one-size-fits-all. After more than 30 years of working with aromatherapy and formulation, we have learned that two people can be looking for support in the same general area and still need very different products because their preferences, sensitivities, households, and ways of using aromatherapy are not the same.

Sometimes customization begins with something very simple. You may like the purpose and overall aroma of one of our existing blends but dislike one particular essential oil. Perhaps you are looking for something to use as part of your evening routine, and like one of our relaxation blends, but lavender is an aroma you really do not like. That does not necessarily mean the entire product is wrong for you. We can look at why lavender was included in the original formula, what role it was intended to play, what aromas you do enjoy, and whether another essential oil can take its place while keeping the blend balanced. In that situation, we are not creating something completely new; we are adapting an existing Casaroma formula so that the person who is actually going to use it wants to use it.

Customization can become even more valuable when a product is shared within a household. Perhaps you use our Restorative or Fortifying Shampoo, but someone else in the home needs to avoid rosemary. Rather than automatically ruling out the entire product, we can look at what the rosemary contributes to the formula and whether another ingredient would make sense in its place. Sometimes the answer will be a different combination of essential oils, a different concentration, or a different way of using the product altogether. Custom aromatherapy is useful partly because it gives us permission to ask those questions before assuming that the same bottle belongs in every home.

This is also where experience matters. There are almost an endless number of essential oil combinations that can be created, but creating a beneficial and well-balanced blend is not choosing three oils that sound appealing and putting them together. We consider the purpose of the blend, the aroma, the strength, the method of use, the people who will be using it, and ingredients that may need to be avoided or adjusted. Sometimes the answer is a small change to a Casaroma recipe we have been making for years, while at other times the person and situation become the starting point and we create something completely new.

And then there is the side of customization that is just for fun. Personalized aromatherapy products can make wonderful gifts because the front label does not have to carry only the standard Casaroma product name. A blend might become Jamie’s Daytime Boosting Blend, a shower gel might become Fred’s Relaxation Shower Gel, or a child’s room spray could become Liam’s Monster Spray. A personal scent could even become Charlotte’s Perfume. Birthdays, Christmas, and other occasions become much more interesting when the product feels as though it was created for one particular person, because in this case it actually was. We can personalize the front label while still keeping the information the product requires, giving you something that remains practical while feeling much more personal.
