Using Hyssop Essential Oil Safely

Hyssop contains pinocamphone and isopinocamphone, constituents that require particular care because of their potential to cause seizures. This is an oil to use sparingly and with an understanding of its composition.

  • Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • Avoid with anyone who has epilepsy or a history of seizures.

  • Do not use with children

  • For skin application, use a conservative maximum concentration of 0.3% Hyssop in the finished product, including when it is combined with other essential oils.

  • Do not take internally or apply undiluted.

  • Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.

  • Store tightly closed, away from heat and light, and securely out of children’s reach.

The 0.3% concentration is a conservative ceiling, not a suggested starting amount. Smaller amounts may be appropriate depending on the blend and the person using it.

What is Hyssop Used For?

Hyssop has a long history in herbal and aromatic traditions, particularly in connection with breathing and cleansing. Its essential oil requires careful dilution and knowledgeable use when included in therapeutic blends.

Hyssop for the Mind and Emotions

In traditional and subtle aromatherapy, Hyssop is associated with purification, release and renewal. It can accompany those moments when we want to put down the weight of a difficult day, gather ourselves and begin again.

Its clear herbal scent can become part of a personal ritual: a quiet pause, a moment of reflection, or an intention to let go of something we no longer need to carry.

Blending with Hyssop

Hyssop has a strong aromatic personality, and a little goes a long way. Choose the dilution and method of use with Hyssop’s safety precautions in mind.
